McMorris signs clothing deal with Walmart

Avatar

Okay, well, umm. This should be a fun social experiment.
90% of real snowboarders have hated on Shaun White at least once by now. So let’s see if Mark McMorris gets the same treatment.

My take on this is I’m not thrilled about it, but it has it’s upsides.
Is it selling out? Yeah probably.
Are the designs or name good? Not really, but I like that he insisted on maple leaves to represent a little bit.
Are there enough kids coming into snowboard? HELL NO, so anything that puts snowboarding in kids faces is a great thing right now. And they are only available in Canadian Walmart so it’s kind of a localised thing which is cool.

If they had an adult line, I wouldn’t wear it. But with that said, I saw a pair of World Industry jeans in Target once and I thought “Wtf? Doesn’t this kind of cheapen the brand a bit?” The answer is yes, but they had Flamey stiched into them!... So I bought them anyway lol. I still wear them.

Seems like most people are comparing him to SW, in regards to selling out…

Lol at stale correcting the bronze medal, (even if its not actually him.. its still funny as!)

But, as a consolation, at least he claims to be doing it to encourage more kids to snowboard.. (which is definitely a good thing!).  it also says he had alot to do with the design, which means he didn’t just slap his name on anything..

At the End of the day it is still a sell out..  but honestly.. some company came up to you, offered you millions of dollars to design and endorse a few shirts.. a lot more people than you like to think would take this..

Although.. I’m a little on the fence about mark ATM.. don’t get me wrong he is an amazing boarder…  but, after the interview chucky posted in the SW half pipe thread about Billy Morgan.. he was saying that mark doesn’t really talk to him.. (he never says he is nasty or anything, just that he doesn’t talk..) and with out knowing marks reasons for this.. there could be a good reason.. but it makes him seem more like SW, who doesn’t socialise with other riders..  (and I really hope mark is different.. because we definitely don’t need 2 SW’s!)

The reason I don’t mind this too much is that I think Mark is a pretty great young dude.

If it was me I would have put more effort into designing clothes that were actually cool, but whatever.

I can tell you for sure that Mark is NOT the same as Shaun in the “doesn’t talk to other riders” deal. The obvious example would be his olympic team mate Seb Toots. Seb and Mark have been homies for as long as I’ve known about them and it’s still the case. In one sense they are rivals for national team spots, but they have always trained and filmed together etc.

Fair enough.. I like mark and want him to do well.  Just hearing that I was like wtf? But as I said I’m sure there is a reason (maybe he was just trying to stay focused on the comp, or he was dealing with the pain of a broken rib)

and he said he had alot to do with the design.. So maybe that’s what he thinks is cool? I dont mind them… There not like omg I have to by them!! But if I was in the market for clothing aimed at that age group.. I would consider them, especially if I was trying to get people in to snowboarding..

WHY would he get “the same treatment” as The Flying Tampon???

Surely ‘the hate’ is all about Shaun White the person, NOT Shaun White’s deal with Target?

From a personal standpoint, I have no problem with his choice of sponsors.

Nah, scooters are a “sell out” because it’s crapping on your core supporters, but supermarket chains are just a way to pay the bills. Burton’s got their line in Pottery Barn, and while it may raise a bit of a snigger or feigned indignance, it’s no big deal really.

Meh. I wouldn’t be surprised if Mark happens to hear about that and makes an effort to get to know Billy. Or maybe Billy did something he wasn’t aware of? It’ll get sorted. Besides, not everyone gets along all the time - especially people who don’t usually have much contact with each other outside of ‘the office’.

I think it’s kinda cool. Kids would be stoked to wear that stuff. I’d rather Mark McMorris be a little kid’s hero and inspiration than… someone promoting scooters.

Yeh, fair enough chucky..  And I always though mark was a decent guy.. Just threw me a bit reading those comments..  and it didn’t sound like mark (how you normally hear about him..). And as I said.. If we were offered a few mill (or what ever he got..) we would probably do the same..  So nothing against him for that…  SW would have been better with skateboards..  Silly tomato!

and jez.. I’m definitely with you on that one!!

What… is… that… thing?

Why do those things even need to attach to the legs?
Why do you add a walking frame to skates.
Why is the walking from like a penny farthing?
So many questions!!!
