Fractured Vertebrae

By the way guys out of these two which do you think would be the most comfortable to ride with and will stay in the same place rather then move around??

I’ve tried both of those on in store. I believe the top one is more expensive ($300+ the last time I looked) but it’s a great piece of equipment. It’s really flexible while still providing a lot of protection.

The second one retails around $160 if I remember correctly. It protects really well and is flexible for bending forward. You can adjust the straps and I imagine it would stay in place fairly well when riding.

I’m not entirely sure which one provides better impact protection. Personally I really liked the vest and I was considering buying it.

EDIT: Don’t hold me to those prices. The POC vest I looked at might have been a different model.

Ah that sucks man. I fractured my spine at the end of last season. I went and got a little bit of physio but other than that I just tried to rest it. I kept teaching with it… and riding… just tried to avoid the park and bumps. It hurt when compressed.

After the season I really just spent a lot of time lying down. It took a few months before it stopped feeling awkward.

As for the back protection, a lot of my mates have the second one - just the spine strap. I have a protec one. I’ve seen the vest in store here and it retails for over $300. I didn’t try it on but my thoughts were that unless the vest is a perfect fit for you, then it won’t fit in the same way as the other one as it’s not strapped in place. But again, I never tried it on so can’t confirm that idea. I think it would be a lot more comfortable though as the other ones tend to ride up a bit.

Best of luck with recovery.

Hey Sam, cheers mate, sorry got a little confused reading your post mate, which protector did you think would stay in place better?

from what i can gather, the vest/shirt one would be more comfortable as the protec spine thingy rides up?!

The non vest as it has the belt strap. But they do slide up a little bit when wearing them (but not to the point where they are out of place - trying one on and moving around with it will help you see how much it will move).
Of course, I haven’t tried on the vest… I might go try one on in the next few days as they have them at my flatmates store here in Wanaka. But I sure would rather save that extra money either way and go for the non-vest.

Anyone know where they stock them in Sydney?

I know STM stocks Poc. I didn’t see any of them in store but I’m sure they could order it in if you know exactly what you want. Let me know if/what you want and I will see what I can do.

Rider, thats just it, I would prefer to try it on and make a decision based on what fits best and is more comfortable otherwise it’s just a crapshoot.

If you wanted to try a few different ones I’ve got a Protec version in L-XL that you could try if you wanted.  Its similar to the 2nd one. I can take a picture if you want.

Ok well I’m not super happy today.  I went to see an ortho surgeon based on my GP telling me they may be able to offer some ideas on treatment in the way of speeding up my recovery.  What a waste of time and money, $250 for ten minutes , all I got out of it is that it’s impressive how little pain I have and they can’t do anything at all for me.  If I’m still in pain in November I will need a full standing spine Xray to see what’s wrong otherwise it’s just rest for 8 weeks or until I’m painfree.  I can do what I want as it’s not likely to cause any further damage but it might cause some pain.  I really don’t know WTF I’m sposed to do.  She also mentioned that my disc may deteriorate for some reason that wasn’t made clear and if that happens I will need to have something done, what that was wasn’t even alluded to.

I’m happy to try anything, I would love to get another opinion from someone that specialises in sports injuries, everyone in the surgery I went to, and there would have been 20, was past retirement age.  I’m not willing to go pay $250 to go and hear them tell me the same thing however.  If anyone has anything to add please let me know, Spaz you intimated you had more to add in your first post, feel free to please.

I think perhaps I may have had a little too much pinned on a positive outcome from specialist, at least an option of some kind would have been nice but was basically told na, nothing and chances are in a few years you’re going to be rooted, oh joy.

Did ya GP really refer ya to that specialist?????

I would go and get a second opinion for sure!!!!! Ya spine is worth more to ya than $500!!!!!

And I’m sure that if ya give it time to heal itself properly, it wont be the be all end all!!!!!

I always thought that the discs can be fairly adaptable around injuries such as yours?????

And like I said before, ya rehab (When it comes time) should be core strengthenin as this is what supports ya spine in the first place!!!!! And as I suggested before, just tensin ya abdominal’s while ya sittin in a chair/layin in bed/whatever will help strengthen them somewhat and go a long way in aidin support and recovery for ya spine!!!!!

Hey mate,

I just sent this thread to Becky so hopefully she will have some advice for you soon.

Also passed this on to Jason Volstad DC, our resident Chiropractor.

Mizu yeah my GP did, he said she was one of the best on the northern beaches, my GP is himself very good but not sure about the ortho to be honest, her “bedside manner” and explanation weren’t good or didn’t gel with me, she really didn’t offer anything and I was a little too unsure of what to ask to really drive the consultation.  All in all it was IMO very bad value, maybe I should look into getting my licence to print money, whoops sorry, my medical degree.

In stark contrast my ENT specialist walked me through every option on the table and what the risks and benefits associated with each option were with regard to my upcoming ear surgery.  I was hoping for some similar this time as well.

The ortho said I wasn’t going to be needing any physio or rehab, it’s just a broken bone and it needs to heal which I thought was kinda weird to be honest.  The overwhelming sentiment from both the GP and the ortho is they fairly amazed that I’m not really in much pain and I’m able to do most everything in daily life without a heap of trouble.  One thing I have been using which seems to be great is the tiger balm, that stuff feels unreal.

Mizu I have been trying to use my stomach muscles to stabilise everything as much as possible, I was doing quite a lot of ab work prior to the accident as well.  Despite the lack of 6 pack I suspect that I am actually quite strong through the mid section theres just a fair bit of flesh hiding my abs ha ha!  I think this is making me rethink a few things and I might be better off carrying a lot less weight, maybe getting down to around 90kgs would be best.

My next suggestion is to send you to my amazing Chiro - i love him a lot and he is a snowboarder as well.

And to be honest I almost treat him as my primary carer especially for aches and pains.

I will msg you his contact details - give him a call and have a chat. Best bit is that you can claim him back!

She does sound like a bit of a snake oil dealer!!!!! Even if there was nothin that she could do, she still should have sent ya out of there fully equipped with the knowledge of what was goin on!!!!!

Yeah, Tiger Balm is the bomb!!!!! Whenever I go on holiday I take Paracetamol, Voltaren and Tiger Balm!!!!! Pretty much takes car of anythin that ails ya!!!!!

And I’m sure that I have a six pack underneath my facade also!!!!! God knows I’ve put plenty of six packs in there!!!!!

And don’t talk about claimin things back on medical, oz!!!!! I went and got the big V done yesterday, and my fund said that I can’t claim it cause I didn’t go into the hospital!!!!! WTF????? Yet ya can claim a massage????? I tell ya, the girl at the desk could sense that I was just a tad upset!!!!!  angry
