Chile - August 2016

Avatar

So PB and I went to Chile last month.

We had an awesome time.
One day at Valle Nevado and then 6 days in the Andes with Andes Heliboarding.

I can not recommend these guys any more highly.  Professional from start to finish.  Outstanding guides, accomodation that beat all expectations, the most skilled pilots - just awesome.

Epic!

How was Valle Nevado?  I’ve been eyeing off Chile for a couple of years now, what were your overall impressions of the resort?  Are there others nearby?  What are the typical costs for general living?  Would you go back?

Cheers!

Hola @Hughman666 !
Yes I’d go back.  If you watched the video that’s the very last thing I said!  Felt like Arnie snake

I’d go back in a heartbeat, but the wallet needs time to recover.  The bang for the buck was insane though.  I’ve never had a more intense and thrilling snowboarding trip!

Valle Nevado was great.  Nice big resort, great grooming, good infrastructure.  We were there nearing the end of the season after a week of no new snow and it started to snow while we were there.  So groomers were hard packed, but quickly softened with fresh snow.  I can imagine on a mid winter powder day it’d be divine.

Valle Nevado is at the top of a gnarly hill climb with 42 switchback turns in a row.  Traffic is limited to one direction up in the morning, and down after 3, with a few police escort exceptions through the day.

There are 2 other ski resorts on the way up.

General cost of living - it’s South America, it’s can be done cheaply.  But not everywhere is cheap.  And skiing is beyond the means of many Chileans, so that’s still going to cost.  The heliskiing - exxy!

On the way back from Valle Nevado there were hundreds of cars parked off to the side of the road in clearings - all locals tobogganing and having BBQS outside the resort - it’s free entertainment.
