New Zealand 2015

Big cold front here this weekend! Most South Island ski fields set to get somewhere between 10-30cm over the next few nights. I’m based in Franz Josef and we have plenty down to 800m or so, potentially as low as 300-400m when I wake up in the morning.

Not many snaps from today, but expect there to be a lot more tomorrow and Tuesday!

Just booked my first stint in Queenstown as well, June 16th - 23rd. Excitement is now rising!

Delivered this morning as promised!

Treble cone again

Coronet

Remarks

Mt Hutt

I know it’s unlikely to stick around, but still enough to cause excitement. I’m going to try jump on a heli flight this afternoon and get a good picture of the depth up top here on the west coast.

I never got to ride when I went last year :( to early in the year. Loved it! The mountains are breath taking. What’s it like for accommodation in the snow season?

Pretty reasonable I reckon. We stayed just out of Queenstown in an awesome 2 bedroom apartment and it was about 1800 for 8 nights (between 4 of us). We’ve stayed there two years in a row now. 30 min drive to the top of the remarkables and easy access to coronet peak and cardrona.

I would quite happily move to Queenstown tomorrow if I had the chance.

That is a really good deal.

Same I would love to live in NZ for a while. Nature galore!

We are heading over in July for a week.

Flights, car, lift passes, accomm and breakfasts $3800 for two of us staying in Wanaka.

5 of us heading over in Mid-August for 10 days (gotta get along to Beervana in Wellington). The first time we stayed in a cabin at the Queenstown caravan park.  Single bunk each and it was around $30pp/night.  Cheap and cheerful, ok for a boys’ week - the cabin was purely for limited sleep and drying clothes.
Since then we’ve stayed in better accomm which comes at a price but it’s still cheap.
This year we’ve booked a upscale 5 bedroom place (everyone is sick of everyone else’s snoring) 5 minute walk to Wanaka town centre (wanted to be closer to TC & Cardrona) which works out at $120pp/night - still a bargain.
The 3 day & 5 day passes for TC & Cardrona are good value too.
Hoping to get along to the Lake Tekapo fields this year if the snow dumps down a shitload grin

Happy to supply the snow porn, it’s coming down again tonight so might have even more tomorrow!

I can’t help but be overly excited for this season, targetting around 60-70 days riding. Working at Roundhill June 27th-Sept 13th and riding the other fields open before and after until everything closes. Got 5 possibly 6 weeks off work to enjoy it while it lasts! A move to Queenstown has always been tempting but I’m in a long distance relationship and don’t want to make that distance even further…

Hughman, if it’s dumping you’ve gotta get along to Tekapo! Killer rope tow up the range which opens up so much more terrain than we service with just the T-bars.

Dude, absolutely hanging out to get to Roundhill, biggest vert in A/NZ I hear, 780 metres!  The rope tow up is going to suck, but will definitely be worth it!
I’ve also heard good things about Dobson & Ohau if the snow is good, they’re apparently very uncrowded grin

Had no crowds at Ohau when I went but it was also a whiteout day!

780m of vert is still less than half of Revelstoke. That mountain is insane!

That’s on the list for Jan 2016!

Anyone know of any jobs going in Queenstown? I’ve applied for lifty job but haven’t heard anything. So I was thinking i’d try and get some kind of outdoor job or if that’s too hard then a bar job. Pretty much just a job to fund me through the season as it’s not looking too good at getting a job here. Anyway if anyone has any job and accom info that would be awesome!

You could try Skyline. They have a lot of employees, and are the parent company of plenty of other tourism attractions. I work under them here in Franz Josef 8 months of the year with the Helicopters. Last week’s internal email they had a position for Luge attendants, doesn’t seem to be on the website now. You could also contact The Helicopter Line Queenstown and ask. Honestly just look up places you’d like to work at and get in contact, they don’t have to be advertising for you to enquire. Bar/restaurant jobs are very sort after, work the nights and ride all day, send out as many CVs and cover letters as you can. You don’t have to accept the job if you don’t want to, but it’s best to have options.
