Advice on terrain parks

Hey guys/girls,

Last trip to the snow I decided to attempt the boxes in the piper park on the way over to perisher. Needless to say I ate shit on all attempts. Any one got some advice for when I attempt the leichhardt park this weekend? Would like to be successful this time around.

Made the bad choice to only rock a tshirt when doing those rails, chewed up a fair bit of skin. I’ll be taking a lighter jacket this time.

Myself and Dylan will be there this weekend in Lickarse and FV I presume, Dylan goes ok on the boxes, I’m a 50/50 only really on boxes.  My main piece of advice is stay centred, your rails don’t work on boxes so you need to be balanced and centred and prepared to ride the whole thing out in the position that you started at first anyway.

flat board, bent knees and keep your eyes on the end of the box!

As Cords said, plus keep your shoulders aligned with the box unless you’re wanting to ride off switch or spin 180+ degrees on the box. Also check your forward lean isn’t too high on your bindings.

If you describe your common problems and what you were attempting (i.e. heels slipping away and landing on bum in 50/50, or sliding off the rail before the end during boardslide etc) or can post videos we can give you more insight into why it was happening and how to correct it.

Thanks.

Both times I made the box 50-50 and lost it on my toe edge (natural rider) just as I was readying for the dismount. May not have had my knees bent enough. So yeah, towards the end of the box I was slowly drifting around from a 50-50 to a board slide, about 45/60 degrees.

If that makes sense?

yeah, do you mean your toes slipped out underneath you and you fell forwards? you were probably leaning over your toes and not centered above the board. The reason you were drifting was because you had poor alignment - keep those shoulders pointing down the box the whole time! Doing this one will help with the toe edge as well as it will keep you centered above the board.

3 easy steps!
1. shoulders in line with the box
2. bent knees
3. keep your eyes a head of you and on the end of the box!

practice it on the snow riding with a flat base first!

That’s pretty much what happened. I’ll try and keep those steps in mind when I have another crack this weekend. Thanks smile

Shoulders in line with the box and shoulders pointing down the box? sounds like the opposite thing? can you explain I am confused…..

sounds like the same thing to me.

yeah, basically the same thing… in line with the box means both your shoulders are pointing the same direction the box is running as if there was a pole through your shoulders and you had to point the pole down the box…. and down the box means the same thing… just different ways of saying it.

Example here, even though he’s doing a front board and not 50/50 it has the same idea, you can see his shoulders (and arms) run in line with the rail, this means he won’t spin on it and can ride out in his natural stance.

Sam’s theory is spot on. Now you need to apply it. Most stacks I see are due to people freaking out; on the box, or just before, and doing something dumb, like trying to turn. Most freak out because they think they are going to fast - stress less, faster is no more difficult, just means you’re on and off the feature sooner.

My tip:

Draw an imaginary line 2-3 meters out from box, let’s call it the ‘commit’ line. Once you pass that point, grit you teeth and hold your stance regardless of speed. If you stay strong you will fine!

Hey Northern Lights

Sam’s tips are right on the money. But I also have a really important tip that I know, only cause I work at Perisher.

DON’T GO TO LEICHHARDT PARK!

Bro town (leichhardt) is our mid range park. Meaning it has ONLY Medium and Large features. Piper as you know is our Small features park and is now closed.

BUT they have built a small park at Yabby Flats which is just to your right as you get off the Quad chair at mid station. You will find the boxes from piper in there.
As always in freestyle, start small and work your way up. Get the boxes in yabby flats nailed 20 times or more and then think about medium rails. The next easiest after those will be the “Anolog feature” in bro town and then the flat down box in there too.

Happy Jibbing! Also if you see a really tall guy in the park with a brown burton hoody and blue pants, flag me down. I’ll be happy to help you out shaka

Last tip: Don’t fight it! If you feel you’re not riding straight and are slipping off the box, let it happen! You can’t turn on a box so stay centered and ride it out, if you try to control it you’ll end up slipping out.

Thanks for the heads up! I’ll keep an eye out for you.

Thanks for the tips, successfully completed both boxes at mid station doing 50-50, up to trying board slides. Need to remember to learn further forward.
