Dodgy knees

Hey BW resident Drs,

Last year I taped my left knee every day to prevent any further injury to my reconstructed ACL but found that I cut and rubbed and was overall very restrictive. This year I have also hurt my right knee, minor tear to my medial ligament playing touch footy. So I’ll likely need support for both knees. Any recommended strapping techniques or knee braces to purchase.

Cheers

PS I snowboard if this makes a difference

I’m not doctor just want to say sucks! I would seek some professional to see what would be the best way to strap. If you do this wrong you could end up making it worse.

The professional advice last year is what ended up cutting and rubbing. Makes for an unpleasant trip.

You can get stuff to put under the tape to stop it cutting and rubbing. I have my ankle taped 4 times a week and did have my knee taped that often for a while last year after a medial tear. There is a few different types, either a different type of tape to put over the spot that is rubbing or a thin foam tape that comes in a roll and you wrap the area before you tape it. I tore my medial last year and have been riding without tape, its been about 8mths since I did it. I just wear a wetsuit material brace to keep it warm ( you can get them with thin aluminium supports in them as well).

Thanks crackers. My left knee probably doesn’t need it anymore, all in my head. And I’m Hoping my right knee comes good before I head down.
Hopefully this year I meet a few of you down at perisher.

Yeh I wear an elastic compression bandage in my right knee.. Which is bad from years of netball.. Then made worse a few years ago on skis.. Hence why I swapped to a board. And my knee has been fine.. It started to collapse out from me when skiing rougher terrain.. Then I stacked and rolled it and ended up with a fist sized blood blister /bruising on the back of it.. So now regardless of how it feels I put the bandage on, I got it from a chemist for about $35-40…

and as said above ask your doctor about it… Tell him that last time when strapped it cut in.. ( I hated strapping it because of this.. Everytime I stacked getting up hurt to even bend my knee because it felt like it was digging in..). So I asked for an alternative, smile

How did you keep the elastic bandage in place, hoz? I used one toward the end of the season with a bit of strapping tape. The standing up is definately the biggest killer.

I don’t know how many times I have to say it but swinging over onto your front is way easier on your whole body than trying to stand up on your heels.

^^ hells yes!!!

^^^ Agree!!!! Even though I feel like a beached whale doing it LOL

And I agree with crackers. the white tape underneath is great to stop the rubbing etc.

But I also was going to agree with the neoprene(wet suit material) knee brace.

When I was a teen I had major issues with my knees! They wanted to do exploratory laparoscopic surgery but I was digging my heels in as back then the exploratory stuff could do more damage (few friends had to give up sports even though they never found or fixed anything in the surgery)

But the best thing for it is I now get adjusted by the chiro! It turns out it is my hips that is throwing my knees out!

I no longer have to wear a brace/strap!

it has a rubber lining around the top and bottom.. (like the stuff they use in strapless bras.. Lol)

and I put it on over my tights (like thermals but not.. Because they get too hot) and it doesn’t move.. smile

So I’m off to see the specialist in regards to my knee. Looking like torn meniscus :( might need a tidy up, my physio has my June 28 recovery timeline and is hopeful I can make it for the season. Fingers crossed.

If your looking for a better tape that is more supportive but still has a good range of movement and less likely to cut in than elastoplast type tape, look into KT tape (Kinesiology Tape). Its that coloured stuff that you see all over the athletes these days

Will definately look into that if I get the all clear from the specialist. Thanks mate.
