Surf Trip Ideas for 8 peeps

Avatar

looking at doing a surf trip next year, theres about 8 of us. guys and girlfriends.
anyone got any ideas… basically what we are after:
- Mentawais or Fiji or Samoa or Indo
- hotel accom or resort
- boat charters to breaks within close distance to accom (ideally run by the accom) rough cost per day
- rights and lefts :D
- 7-8 nights rough cost

ideally a package would be simple and easy, anyone got anyideas? or have some personal experience?
maybe a rough idea on price for all this.

Your info will help heaps :D

cheers mcgoo

I do mate, I’m headin off with 7 mates in November back to Tonga, all up airfares included the trip is worth about $1000 for 7 nights.  The airline change the flights so now we get there a night earlier and have to stay at the airport hotel for the first night but we get a full extra day surfing so no one is complaining.

With that said it’s not 5 star by any means.  Dinner is a communal affair with everyone in the resort eating together buffet style with “home cooked” style of food but it really is a highlight.  Accom is basic, there is no swim up bar or pool, there is no alcohol served at all but your welcome to bring as much as you want and they’ll refrigerate it for you.

You can walk 5 mins down the beach to another resort where they have a bar and restaurant but everything is very much “island time”.  There are a few resorts on the surf coast but I stay with the one I have cause they have their own boat to get to other breaks.  There is plenty of surfing to be had out the front though.

never been to Fiji but have been to Mentawaii’s and Bali.  Samoa is much more commercialised than Tonga but they kinda have more surf options but more crew as well.

Mentawaii’s there are quite a few landcamp options, I have heard good things about

and I have been on two boat trips with these guys but they have a landcamp as well anmed Aloita

Indo will generally cost you more in time and money to get to as well as transfers to get to where you’re going.  To the Mentawaiis you generally fly from Aus to Singapore or KL then a connecting flight to Padang then you get on your boat trip or your catch an inter island ferry to the landcamp.  From what I understand Fiji is similar in this respect.

In terms of girlfriend happiness resorts I would say Fiji and Samoa would be better placed for that aspect.  If the girls surf it helps, my GF doesn’t but she throughly enjoyed her time in Tonga but she is very easy going, diva’s might struggle there.  Have a squiz at http://www.worldsurfaris.com/au/index.aspx to get a better idea of what’s available and where.  There are a myriad of options available and there are other south pacific options depending upon what it is your after.  Whats the general skill level of your group like.

here’s a quick vid I made of my first Tonga trip in Easter.
