Karan, welcome to BW, congrats on deciding you want to take the plunge and learn to surf, it will be one of the most intensely difficult but most gratifying and inspiring things you’re likely to do if you stick at it.

In terms of what you’re looking for, personally I always try to steer ppl towards the craft that will have them standing up as quick and for as long as you can and with that in mind a larger board in the malibu style of board generally works best.  You can definitely get one in a foam variety, they are not quite the same as fibreglass but inifintely more user friendly for the beginner.  For your weight something approaching or bigger than 9ft would probably be best.  You can go shorter for sure but there is a trade off, yes it’s easier to handle and store but it’s generally not going to be as easy to paddle or as stable.

thanks NBG
Much appreciated grin

I would be checking around the surf shops in your area for sales.  I picked up a 8” softboard packaged with a leash, wax and board bag for a really good price at a shop sale.
