Anyone out there bodysurfing with a handplane?

Yeah for sure. The bigger handplane are better for waves < 3ft anything more than that then a smaller handplane will work. Perhaps your friend had a smallish handplane? For smaller waves you can use one that’s made out of glass/foam like a surfboard and it makes it easier also due to the buoyancy, as opposed to a wood one.

I’ve got a brownfish myself (like the one on the right). My one is a little longer though, that one above is for hella pros, and I’m not one of them!

haha nice pic lol

don’t you guys use fins? how do you get on waves without fins?!? I reckon anything over 5-6 foot needs fins.. what u guys think?

I’ve never used fins for bodysurfing and I have bodysurfed in some decent swell. I think it definitely helps that I am a strong swimmer (I grew up swimming competitively and spent many years doing nippers and lifesaving). I feel with good timing and positioning I can propel myself onto any wave. I’ve never really had a problem with not being able to get onto waves. I can definitely understand how fins help though, it’s just not my thing.

If its big enough and long period swell its almost impossible to get into them early enough to actually go across the face and ride them properly if you don’t have fins on. You might be able to get on the odd one but you will usually get into them too late and get smashed straight away, but mostly you will fall off the back. If you don’t believe me then you haven’t tried when its big enough wink

ps: yes this is a challenge/stir up try and make you get some footage bodysurfing some monsters smile
