Open/Closing Dates of Mountains

I noticed this is something that is hard to find on the net. So I thought I would start this thread so we can share our home mountain knowledge.

So post the name of your local mountain (or one you have done a season at) and tell us it's open and closing dates for the season:

ALASKA 2012 - Travel Journal

To those who have pondered or even thought for a second about taking a trip to Alaska, I say do it, and do it now, and by now I mean next season as the snow is starting to melt. At least you have a good few months to scratch together some coin and start organising. I make this statement as I have just returned from a week’s long trip to the land of big mountains and big snow that is AK.

Just briefly, here is a bit of background so you can get an idea of the level of snowboarding I brought with me to AK. I have done probably around 50 days of snowboarding in total in my life. I have never done a season and hadn’t really rode any proper big mountain terrain except a 3 run heli-boarding session in New Zealand a couple of years ago, and during a 3 week trip in Canada before arriving in AK. By the end of Canada I could confidently make it down a double black run in resorts like Fernie, Red Mountain and Revelstoke. The other two friends I went to AK with have done 7 full seasons between them in places like Canada, Australia and India. I was by far the weakest rider in the group.

So the basis of our Alaskan adventure was to fly from Vancouver to Anchorage on the 5th April, hire an RV, take a road trip to Fairbanks and then down to Valdez to heli-board, before arriving back in Anchorage and then fly home on the 14th April. Below is a kind of part by part of how things went down, along with some information that hopefully will help people out when organising a similar trip.

NOTE: Skip to Part 5 if you just want to read about heli-boarding.
I thought it was about time to start the official Whistler 2011 / 2012 thread.

The peaks are already covered in snow and the forecasters have called for another epic La Nina winter. Last season was the second best on record, with more than 15 metres of snow falling during the season. There have already been claims of even a better winter during 2011 / 2012.

Who is going to be in Whistler this season? Are you coming for the season or for a holiday? Where are you working? Have you been to Whistler before? What are your plans? What are you looking forward to?

We will be having a lot of Boardworld shred days, meet ups, dinners, drinks, and fun times. Please get involved in this thread; it's a community blog, here for everyone. Post your photos, videos, stories, share your plans, or just drop in for a chat.
If you have any questions or need help, please feel free to ask here. There is a wealth of knowledge on the forums and we are more than happy to help.
Pre Japan 2012/13 Season plan!!!!!

So, as the title suggests, I am just puttin it out there to see who is thinkin about a Japow trip next season?????

There has been a few of us talkin about a Hakuba/Niseko 3-4 week stint, maybe with a bit of cultural Kyoto/Tokyo etc thrown in!!!!!

Who knows, maybe even rock on up to Gamblor's new pad and see just how grumpy he can really get?????

If there is a bit of talk, and early prep (Hence this thread now), then we might be able to match up a few get togethers between Boardworld Members, and make the whole event just that little bit more memorable!!!!!

Plus this gives everyone plenty of notice in order to get their funds/holidays sorted!!!!! (See how considerate I am!!!!!)

Soooooooooo, who's in?????

Montana

I've been looking around and haven't seen much information or stories from people hitting the slopes in Montana.

I spent four months snowboarding there with a season pass at a local mountain called Bridger Bowl and made a few trips to Big Sky, Moonlight Basin and one slightly longer trip to Great Divide in Helena.

I feel like I'm slightly betraying the city of Bozeman where I have been living in telling you all about Bridger Bowl but it was by far my favourite mountain out of any other I've been to. It is small and it loves being that way. Being voted in the top 25 of ski towns in the world by nat geo kind of makes it hard for it to remain a secret much longer anyway. It's not just that they have terrain for all riders from the extreme to the kiddy slopes, its the fact that it's a non-profit community owned mountain meaning the prices are cheap, the developments and ideas come from the people who are riding the mountain most. Also a big plus is I can count on one hand the number of times I've had to wait in a lift line for longer than 2 minutes.

Big Sky is more like the Whistler of Montana, the resort has linked with moonlight basin to form an area with a scarily large amount of mountain to ride. I prefer the park at Moonlight and it appears so do the guys at Toy Soldier Productions (http://toysoldierproductions.com) check them out!

I definitely prefer the easy going non-judgemental lifestyle of living in Bozeman compared to the trendy "are you sponsored?" environment of Whistler. The skiiers definitely outnumber the boarders here but that hasn't stopped me having a go at them whenever the opportunity arises. I probably can't finish this post without mentioning a case of beer costing $20 and the $8 'Irish Trashcan' (I'll leave the research up to you!)

So basically if you have any questions or opinions about boarding in Montana let me know. If you've been before I'd love to hear your stories or other tips that help me for next time I return which will surely be soon!
